On Tuesday, April 19, Deputy Chief of Mission Jeff Cellars addressed the 11th Massachusetts – Basel-Stadt Students Exchange Program participants. The 30 American high school students came to Basel for a two-week homestay sponsored by CityBasel and Wakefield High School via a Sister City Agreement with Boston. In his remarks, Mr. Cellars stressed the significance of face-to-face interactions with people from foreign cultures that allow us to welcome strangers as guests. He emphasized that today’s leaders, facing unprecedented challenges on a global scale, must work together to solve problems they can’t address alone. In closing, Mr. Cellars called upon the students to visit more foreign countries and maintain a spirit of empathy and curiosity.
