U.S. Embassy Local Speaker Program

Bezirksschule Oftringen

The Embassy Local Speaker Program is designed to provide Swiss school students with the opportunity to meet with U.S. Embassy staff and other American citizens to learn more about the United States.

A typical visit begins with an Embassy staff member or other American citizen presenting a short overview on a subject related to American society, culture, politics. Following this introduction, the speaker engages in a question and answer session with the students. With sufficient planning, the content of the sessions can also be tailored to complement a class’ curriculum.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The work of the Embassy
  • The life of a diplomat
  • Protocol at the Embassy
  • The U.S. school system and school experience
  • Geography and regions of the U.S.
  • U.S. government and policies
  • Work and life in the U.S.
  • Travel, tourism, sports
  • U.S. history

The embassy is happy to visit schools throughout Switzerland, but is also able to host small groups in Bern. The presentations and discussions can be carried out in English, French and German.
